Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson realize that some people are not meant to become besties in the trailer for the A24 comedy Friendship.
Writer-director Andrew DeYoung’s feature is set to hit theaters in May from A24 after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Midnight Madness roster. Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer, Josh Segarra and Billy Bryk round out the cast. Friendship centers on Craig (Robinson), whose attempts to connect with neighbor Austin (Rudd) run the risk of destroying both of their lives.
“Look, we had a couple of really nice hangs, but I think it best if we go our separate ways,” Rudd tells Robinson in the trailer. “I don’t wish to continue this friendship.”
Later, Robinson expresses his own frustrations. “You all accepted me way too fast,” he says. “You cant do that.”
Serving as producers are Johnny Holland, J.D. Lifshitz, Raphael Margules and Nick Weidenfeld. Friendship’s world premiere took place at TIFF on Sept. 8, 2024.
Rudd starred in last year’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and he can be seen later this year in the features Death of a Unicorn and Anaconda.
In his review of Friendship for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Michael Rechtshaffen wrote, “Having successfully built a devoted following as a leading purveyor of cringe comedy with his hit Netflix sketch series, I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson, the show’s rubber-faced star/co-creator ups his game with the innocently titled Friendship, a gleefully discomfiting portrait of male bonding that delivers some of the year’s biggest laughs.”
