TV Shows Like ‘The White Lotus’

No, Succession isn’t set in a luxury resort in Hawaii, Sicily or even Thailand — but this fellow beloved HBO series does reek of wealth. This series is centered on the influential (and fictional) Roy family as its patriarch, Logan Roy (Brian Cox), grapples with the question of who will take over his media empire. With stellar performances by an all-star cast featuring Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook and Kieran Culkin, who won the lead actor prize at the 2023 Emmys for his role of Roman Roy, Succession is the perfect White Lotus alternative if you’re looking for more dysfunctional on-screen family dynamics. 

In Nine Perfect Strangers, Nicole Kidman stars as a wellness retreat host who promises to offer relief and support to, well, nine perfect, unknowing strangers. However, things take a turn when the guests come to learn that Kidman’s character, Masha Dmitrichenko, has secretly given them a dosage of hallucinogens. After binging season one, gear up for the show’s second season which arrives via Hulu on May 21. 

If you’re fresh off watching season three of White Lotus, look no further, because Schitt’s Creek is the life that the Ratliff family may be heading back to after their troublesome stay in Thailand. The CBC show, now streaming on Hulu, spotlights a rich family who dramatically learns they’ve lost all their money. (Sound familiar?) Because they’ve lost pretty much everything, they’re forced to move to the town of Schitt’s Creek, which is, coincidentally, one of the only things the Rose family has left to their name. Where White Lotus guests bask in their riches, Schitt’s Creek turns the tide and portrays what can happen when the affluent are forced to lead a normal lifestyle. 

Based in the coastal town of Nantucket, Massachusetts, this show is best defined as a beachy murder mystery. Before Amelia (Eve Hewson) is about to wed the wealthy Benji (Billy Howle), a killing occurs, and suddenly all of the partygoers become suspects.  

If you haven’t watched this series already for its star-studded cast (which includes Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Lauren Dern, Meryl Streep, Zoë Kravitz and Shailene Woodley), it’s time to add it to your must-watch list. The TV adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s book of the same title, Big Little Lies, follows a group of women in Monterey, California, who find themselves at the center of a murder. So far, there have only been two seasons of the show released on HBO, but rumblings of a third season have been teased by the cast since the second installment came to an end in 2019. 

On a quest to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary, Noah (William Jackson Harper) and Emma (Cristin Milioti) embark on a vacation in an attempt to save their marriage. However, when the couple comes across clues of an unsolved disappearance from years back, they take things into their own hands and investigate the enigma. 

Saint X centers around something fans seem to love the most about White Lotus — murder in a lush location. The TV show is based on Alexis Schaitkin’s novel of the same name about a younger sister (Alycia Debnam-Carey) who returns to the vacation spot where her elder sister (West Duchovny) was murdered in hopes of seeking revenge. 

Don’t let the title of this TV show fool you — Paradise is Dan Fogelman’s political thriller based in a post-apocalyptic world after the president is killed. The series stars Sterling K. Brown as Xavier Collins, a Secret Service agent tasked with uncovering what happened to his boss.

Cassandra Bowen’s (Kaley Cuoco) life as a flight attendant battling alcoholism changes instantly one day when she wakes up in a hotel room beside a lifeless Alex Sokolov (Michiel Huisman). With no idea how she got there, Cassie quickly turns into the main suspect in the mystery of Alex’s death as she tries to figure out just what happened on the night that he died. A second season brought Cassie back to witness a murder and become entangled in yet another international incident.
